SWIMS

From off-the-beaten-path beaches to the famous Ironman swim course, we hit all the best spots for swims on the Kona and Kohala Coasts. Be among the lucky few to join us for this one-of-a-kind adventure. The clarity of the waters, the healthy coral reef system, and the abundant wildlife, including dolphins, will thrill even the most jaded of well traveled swimmers.

All swims are guided, with at least two SwimVacation staff members swimming with the group, and one watching over us from a standup paddle board or dinghy. We do not race. We tour the reefs, have fun, and often we stop to see fish and coral. You can go hard, or you can go easy. Elite swimmers will be offered longer swims.

Swims are tailored to meet the needs of swimmers with different abilities. With only six to eight swimming guests per trip, two groups may be formed, and each group may create different goals. Ocean swimming is our passion, and it’s the focus of activity on your SwimVacation.

ACCOMODATIONS

Our home for the week is a private residence on Waialea Bay, on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. The home sits right on the edge of “Beach 69”, a stunningly beautiful white sand beach, from which we’ll swim every morning. Designed to capture the trade-wind breezes and give its inhabitants both communal space and privacy, the home is open, airy and thoroughly “old Hawaii.” Located about 30 miles north of Kona Village, and within striking distance of so many wonderful swims.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Private chefs Dan and Clare Bobo prepare all meals for our guests in the open air kitchen at our home, Treadwell House. Dan has over 30 years experience and has held several Executive Chef positions at award winning restaurants in the Seattle area. He and his wife, Clare, moved to the Big Island in 2002 where they both went to work at the Kohala Coast resorts before starting Island Thyme Gourmet. They are well versed in global cuisines with extensive expertise in seafood and, of course, local Hawaiian flavors.

Snacks and refreshing beverages will be available before, during, and after your swims. A fully stocked bar with beer, wine, and liquor is included. Special dietary needs can be accommodated to a certain extent.

ACTIVITIES

Throughout the week, a cultural experience, a boat day, oceanfront massage and yoga sessions are provided and included in the price of the trip.

We have several aquatic activities to give us a break from all of the fabulous swimming. There are options for body surfing, stand up paddle boarding, free diving, rock running and more.

SWIMMING CLINICS

The clear waters of Hawaii allow us to take videos of your stroke right in the open water during the first 2 days of your trip. On the second or third night we have a collaborative stroke analysis for every guest. During the week we also cover open water swimming techniques such as safety, sighting and navigation, buoy turns, pack swimming and drafting and race strategy for those who are interested.

RUNNING & CYCLING

We understand that some of our customers are training for all three legs of a triathlon. Training rides and runs can be scheduled throughout the trip. Time trial and road bike rentals can be arranged, as well as guided workouts along the Ironman Kona course.

GETTING HERE

Kona Keahole International Airport (KOA), is an open-air affair with easy arrivals and departures. SwimVacation will provide private ground transportation to and from our home base at Treadwell House, just up the coast.

When we’re not swimming right from our home at Beach 69, SwimVacation guides provide shuttle service to all of our swimming locations and activities daily. Most of our guests find no need to rent a car.

Passport

Non-U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport for travel to the U.S.

Phone/Internet Service

Cell phone service in Kona and at Treadwell House is excellent. Our house also has free wifi.

Costs not covered by your charter / SwimVacation fee:

One lunch in downtown Kona after our IronMan swim, and any other meals and drinks you wish to purchase away from our home base at Treadwell House (not necessary, but some guests like to venture out on their own for an evening).

Bike or stand up paddleboard rentals.

Gratuity. At the end of your SwimVacation, please consider leaving a gratuity for your swim guides. The customary amount is 15% to 20%, but this is completely up to you and how much you enjoyed your vacation. SwimVacation directly tips all of our wonderful vendors (private chef, massage therapists, boat captains, etc).

Insurance - All SwimVacation customers must be self insured for medical and repatriation costs, and for all activities you will pursue on your vacation. Many health insurance policies to not cover costs related to these activities. For the best rates and options, we recommend Insuremytrip.com. Highly recommended: Purchase trip insurance that covers cancellation or trip interruption in the unfortunate event that you have to cancel your reservation with us or become delayed. Do this as soon as you make a deposit on your SwimVacation. You do not need to wait until you purchase your air travel! You can estimate travel costs and insure for that amount.

Cancellation Policy. Should you decide to cancel your vacation, the following charges will apply: Cancellations 8 or more weeks prior to start date: retention of 50% of total fees plus handling fee of 3% of total fees; between 8 and 4 weeks: retention of 70% of total fees plus handling fee of 3% of total fees; less than 4 weeks: retention of 100% of total fees. In all of these cases all payments received to date by SwimVacation will be refunded. SwimVacation is not responsible for expenses that are incurred in preparation for any cancelled trips, including third party online booking fees, airline tickets, or for costs that are incurred due to airline delays, flight cancellation, or illness.
